DVAR TORAH Rabbi Raphy Goldstein LS Rebbe When the תורה introduces the laws of the עבודה of כפור,יום it tells us that the מצוה was given Acharei Mos Shinei Benei Aharon, after the death of the two sons of Aharon. Rashi, based on the Toras Kohanim, explains that the death of Nadav and Avihu are mentioned as an impactful warning to Aharon to be careful about entering the הקדשים.קדש The כהן גדול is warned about the serious nature of this activity, so that he would not lose his life in the same way that Nadav and Avihu lost theirs. This is difficult to understand. Chazal offer many different explanations as to what the sin of Nadav and Avihu was and most have nothing to do with entering הקדשיםthe,קדש so what message is there for Aharon? How does their death serve as a warning for him? Rabbi Betzalel Rudinsky offers an answer to this question based on a כלי יקר in this week s.פרשה One of the details we learn about the עבודה of יום כפור is that the only person who was able to go into the קדש הקדשים was the כהן גדול and even his entry was limited to כפור.יום The כלי יקר explains that this is because the holiness of the קדש הקדשים was so extreme that no human being was capable of entering. It was only as a representative of the Jewish people as a whole that the כהן גדול was granted entry. However, during the rest of the year, the Jewish people had sins יום and therefore their messenger couldn t enter. It was only on when the Jewish people were purified from their Aveiros כפור that the גדול,כהן acting as a messenger of the people representative, was qualified to go in. There are many different explanations about the sin of Nadav and Avihu. However, Rabbi Rudinsky explains that one common theme among those ideas is that they acted as individuals who were focused primarily on their own personal growth without concern for their place among the community. They decided the Halacha on their own without consulting Moshe Rabbeinu or even each other.
